The Schlage Lock site has long been a blight on our neighborhood as an eyesore, an ecological threat, and a lost opportunity. The facilities have been closed since 1999 making the 20 acres comprising the site a potential area for development. The Ingersoll Rand Company, which owns the majority of the site including the most contaminated areas, has not maintained the property, has no plans to clean-up or redevelop the property, and appears to be unwilling to sell it.
Sophie Maxwell and the Board of Supervisors initiated the process of improving the Schlage Lock site by means of declaring it a redevelopment zone. Once designated as a Redevelopment Area, the City has means and resources not othewise available to remediate the site. In Julty 2005 the Board of Supervisors designated the site along with a portion of Bayshore Boulevard and Leland Avenue the Visitacion Valley Survey Area.
As part of the redevelopment process, the Mayor established a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC will advise the Redevelopment Agency and the City in their consideration of whether to declare the area a Redevelopment Area--that is, make the Redevelopment Survey Area a Redevelopment Area--and work with the Planning Department to create Redevelopment Plan for how the site should be developed.
The CAC meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 6 to 8 PM.
